Concert featuring the Seattle gunk-pop trio Black Ends, along with Gully Boys and Pollyanna, at The Funhouse.
Black Ends play The Funhouse on Saturday, November 7, with Gully Boys and Pollyanna opening. It's a local bill for the headliners, a Black and queer-fronted trio from Seattle led by Nicolle Swims. They call their sound "gunk-pop," a blend of grunge, post-punk and alternative rock that's drawn comparisons to early Nirvana. The set will be all ages.
Sharing the bill are Gully Boys, a Minneapolis band that started in the aisles of a thrift shop when vocalist and guitarist Kathy Callahan said she wanted to sing. Drummer Nadirah McGill and bassist Natalie Klemond joined in, and a cover of Best Coast's "Girlfriend" kicked off a sound that channels the energy of No Doubt, Garbage and Hole. They won Best New Band from the Minneapolis City Pages in 2018 and have since toured with Nova Twins, Motion City Soundtrack and Destroy Boys. They're playing as part of their My Big Fat Gay Tour.
Rounding out the night are Pollyanna, a three-piece from New Jersey consisting of Jill Beckett, Daniel McCool and Brandon Bolton. They fuse loud rock, pop and punk, drawing on queer joy and trans pride. Between the three acts, the bill runs from the grunge-leaning sound of Black Ends through the 90s-inflected energy of Gully Boys to the pop-punk of Pollyanna.
