An evening of sonic explorations and new compositions based on banned or censored books, poetry, and taboo topics, presented as part of the Earshot Jazz Festival.
Jessica Lurie brings her new ensemble, BANNED, to The Royal Room on Tuesday, October 13, as part of the Earshot Jazz Festival. Lurie is a woodwind player, composer, and performance artist originally from Seattle, now based in New York, and this is her latest project. The ensemble's repertoire draws on banned or censored books, poetry, songs, and taboo topics, and the set mixes music by female composers, new works by Lurie, and cover tunes by Pussy Riot, Billie Holiday, and Woody Guthrie.
On woodwinds, Lurie is joined by Naomi Siegel on trombone, Andy Coe on guitar, Geoff Harper on bass, and Eric Eagle on drums. The night also features special guests JR Rhodes, Amy Denio, Tobi Stone, and Marina Albero. It's a large group for a single evening, and the program pulls from a wide range of sources—from the political and the poetic to the classic songbook.
Lurie has a long history as both a leader and a collaborator. She records and performs with the Tiptons Sax Quartet, The Living Daylights, and her own Jessica Lurie Ensemble. In 2000, she started her own label, Zipa! Music, and has appeared on more than 30 CDs as a leader and collaborator, working with artists like Bill Frisell, Sleater-Kinney, Skerik, and the Berkeley Symphony. This show is part of the Earshot Jazz Festival, which brings together jazz and improvised music across the city.
