Pacific Northwest Ballet presents three Broadway-inspired ballets: Carousel (A Dance), Take Five...More or Less, and Waiting at the Station.
Pacific Northwest Ballet closes its season with Ballet on Broadway, running June 4 through 13 at Marion Oliver McCaw Hall in the Seattle Center. It's a triple bill that brings together three choreographers who are as comfortable on a Broadway stage as they are with a ballet company, and the whole thing leans on a mix of storytelling, high-level dancing, and a good bit of jazz.
The program opens with Christopher Wheeldon's Carousel (A Dance), which takes its cue from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. Next is Susan Stroman's TAKE FIVE...More or Less, a piece that puts a jazz classic on its feetβThe Seattle Times once described it as "pure dance, and pure joy." The third is Twyla Tharp's Waiting at the Station, which was made for PNB back in 2013; it sets 1940s New Orleans to the music of Allen Toussaint.
It's a good way to see PNB's range in one go. The company has nearly fifty dancers and puts on more than 100 performances a year, both at McCaw Hall and on tour in Europe, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Canada, and the US. It's one of the largest ballet companies in the country, founded in 1972 and led by Peter Boal since 2005, who took over from Kent Stowell and Francia Russell.
