Concert by the Los Angeles retrofuturist motorik pop trio Automatic, supported by Donzii, at Neumos.
Automatic play Neumos on Saturday, October 10, with Donzii opening. The Los Angeles trio ā Izzy Glaudini on synths and lead vocals, Lola DompĆ© on drums and vocals, and Halle Saxon-Gaines on bass ā are touring their second album, Excess, released on Stones Throw.
Excess is retrofuturist motorik pop, and the band frames it around a specific cultural shift: the moment when the 1970s underground met the corporate culture of the 1980s. They describe it as "that fleeting moment when what was once cool quickly turned and became mainstream, all for the sake of consumerism." The songs pair deadpan critiques of corporate culture and extravagance with cold-wave hooks, and the record grew out of jam sessions with producer Joo Joo Ashworth, who has worked with Sasami and FROTH. One track, "New Beginning," took its cue from the Swedish sci-fi film Aniara.
