A live performance by the psychedelic rock collective Acid Mothers Temple, supported by Magick Potion and IRO IRO, at the Clock-Out Lounge.
Acid Mothers Temple play Clock-Out Lounge on Wednesday, October 7, with Magick Potion and IRO IRO opening. If you're not familiar, Acid Mothers Temple is a Japanese psychedelic collective founded in 1995 by Kawabata Makoto, who still leads it. They call themselves a "freak-out group for the 21st century," and the name fits. Over three decades, the collective has pulled in musicians, dancers, artists, farmers, channellers, ex-yakuza, mermaid researchers, and professional vagrants, all held together by a core dedication to improvised music.
That improvisational spirit shows up in their discography, which runs to over a hundred releases. The sound spans drone, acid-folk, acapella, and minimalist composition, so there's a lot of ground they cover. The lineup has shifted over the years: vocalist Jyonson Tsu joined in December 2017, and a rhythm section of Sakamoto and Uchida came on board in 2015. It's a long-running project that keeps changing who's in the room.
Opening the night are Magick Potion, a loud American hard rock group, and IRO IRO, a Seattle instrumental band. IRO IRO is described as the city's most exciting rock group, formed from the aftermath of the early-2020s IQU reunion and the split of electronic unit Zazaz. Between the two openers and the headliner, the bill runs from hard rock to instrumental rock to the wide-open improvisation the Temple is known for.
