Pacific Northwest Ballet presents George Balanchine's classic ballet adaptation of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, set to Felix Mendelssohn's lush score.
Pacific Northwest Ballet brings George Balanchine's A Midsummer Night's Dream back to McCaw Hall from April 16 to 25, 2027. It's a ballet adaptation of Shakespeare's play, set to Felix Mendelssohn's score, and it's been a part of PNB's repertoire for more than 25 years.
Balanchine's version is known for being a witty take on the original story, and the production is built around lavish sets and dazzling costumes. The scenic and costume design is by Martin Pakledinaz, with lighting by Randall G. Chiarelli. The Seattle Times once called PNB's staging "a joy on every level."
There's a fair bit of history behind this one. Balanchine first premiered the ballet at New York City Ballet on January 17, 1962, and it made its PNB debut on May 16, 1985. The version the company is performing now comes from a new production first staged on May 27, 1997.
