South Asian film festival with screenings, Q&As, workshops and panels across South Asia and its diaspora.
Tasveer returns with its 21st Tasveer Film Festival & Market, running from Tuesday, October 13 through Sunday, October 18 at the Tasveer Film Center in Columbia City. It's six days of South Asian cinema, and it's a big one for the festival—this is its 21st year.
Tasveer is North America's premier South Asian film gathering and the world's first and only Oscar-qualifying South Asian film festival. Since 2002, the nonprofit has focused on stories about race, gender, caste, class, religion, and sexuality that often don't find another platform, pulling cinema from across South Asia—Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Tibet—and the diaspora that carries those stories worldwide. The festival pairs its screenings with a Film Market and rounds out the six days with post-film Q&As, workshops, and panels. There's an opening-night red-carpet gala and a closing-night awards ceremony to bookend the whole thing.
It's also a new home for the festival. In 2025, Tasveer acquired Ark Lodge Cinema in Columbia City, which became the Tasveer Film Center—a cinema that screens global cinema seven days a week. Over the years, the festival has launched the careers of Academy Award nominee Shaunak Sen, directors Mariam Ghani and Roya Sadat, Tibetan filmmakers Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam, and documentary pioneer Anand Patwardhan.
