A nine-piece all-female jazz band blending blues, soul, Latin, swing and world music, with two showings at 7pm and 10pm.
Women In Jazz play Lou Lou's Jungle Room on Friday, October 9, with two showings at 7 PM and 10 PM. It's a nine-piece band of women co-led by vocalist, bandleader, and composer Allison Adams Tucker and five-time San Diego Music Award winner Whitney Shay. Shay took home the 2021 award for Best Blues Album for Stand Up! on Ruf Records and has been called a "future blues icon."
The group pulls from all sides of the jazz family—blues, soul, Latin, swing, new-jazz, and world music—and vocalist Amanda Portela adds a sophisticated, world-music-informed presence. Tucker is a San Diego-area musician who fell for jazz in 2005; she's released four albums—Come With Me, April in Paris, Wanderlust, and the RETRO Trilogy—and has played at Blue Note in New York and Ronnie Scott's in London.
Rounding out the nine-piece are keys by Melonie Grinnell, bass by Evona Wascinski, drums by Joannah Sy, percussion by Monette Marino, trumpet by Elizabeth Howard, and sax, flute, and clarinet by April Leslie. With three vocalists and a full horn section, it's a big ensemble for a jazz club.
