Screening of the 1920 silent film 'Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde' starring John Barrymore, with live organ accompaniment by David Marsh on the historic Wonder Morton Organ.
Silent Movie Mondays is back for its third season at the Balboa Theatre, and on Monday, October 26, the focus is Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (1920), starring John Barrymore. It's a silent classic from a century ago, and the whole point of the series is to bring these films back to life with live music played right there in the theater.
The main feature is accompanied on the Balboa's Wonder Morton Organ by David Marsh, who scores the film live as it plays. But the movie isn't the only thing on the bill. The evening starts with a live pre-show organ performance by guest organist Rosemary Bailey, and after the credits roll, there's a talkback with Marsh and film expert Jodi Cilley. If you've ever wondered how a live score is put together for a silent film, that's where you'll get the inside look.
Silent Movie Mondays is led by organist Russ Peck, with a regular rotation of theater organists—David Marsh, Brett Valliant, and Rosemary Bailey—taking turns at the console. The series pairs silent cinema with a live score tailored to the image, and the Balboa's historic, purportedly haunted atmosphere is a fitting backdrop for the program. Season III includes seven films in total, and subscribers get all of them plus a few extra perks.
