A guided painting session led by artist Maira Meza to celebrate DĂa de los Muertos, where participants paint alebrijes with materials provided.
Mujeres Brew House is hosting a paint and sip session on Thursday, October 15, from 6 PM to 8 PM, with local artist Maira Meza leading the way. The theme is alebrijes—those brightly colored, fantastical creatures rooted in Mexican folk art—and the whole evening is tied to Hispanic Heritage Month and DĂa de los Muertos.
If you've never heard of them, alebrijes are the vivid, hybrid animals that often show up in DĂa de los Muertos celebrations, and that's what you'll be painting. Meza guides the session, so you don't need any prior experience to join in. As you work, you'll learn about the cultural significance of the figures, and staff from the San Diego History Center will be on hand to share some local history. All the painting materials are provided, so you just have to show up.
The venue adds its own layer to the night: Mujeres Brew House is San Diego's first Latina-owned brewery, and they serve non-alcoholic options alongside the beer. Between the painting, the history, and the drinks, it's a full evening centered around Mexican art and heritage.
