A guest lecture bringing together artist Ulrike Arnold, astronomer Gerard van Belle and curator Rachel Jans to discuss the intersection of art, science and the cosmos.
Ulrike Arnold is coming to the San Diego Museum of Art on Friday, October 16, for a guest lecture titled Meteorites as Artistic Matter. She'll be joined by astronomer Gerard van Belle, PhD, and curator Rachel Jans, PhD, for a conversation that puts meteorites at the center of art, science, and the cosmos. The three of them will talk through the intersection of those worlds, with Arnold's work as the starting point.
Arnold is an internationally acclaimed artist, and the conversation brings her together with scientists and museum professionals to look at meteorites as artistic matter. It's a guest lecture, so you'll get to hear her talk about her process and the materials she works with, and then see how van Belle and Jans build on that from the astronomy and curatorial sides. The whole thing is hosted by the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park, the region's oldest, largest, and most visited art museum. It draws more than 500,000 visitors a year and holds a permanent collection of more than 35,000 objects, from Spanish and Italian old masters and South Asian paintings to 19th- and 20th-century American art. The museum regularly stages major exhibitions from around the world and runs year-round cultural and educational programs for children and adults, with exhibition text in both English and Spanish.
