Contemporary jazz and electronic music concert by Mark Guiliana with Julian Waterfall Pollack at Soda Bar.
Mark Guiliana plays Soda Bar on Monday, December 7, with Julian Waterfall Pollack opening the night. It's a San Diego date for a drummer who's spent years moving between acoustic jazz, electronic music, and rock, and the set draws from that same wide range.
Guiliana is best known as a collaborator. He's worked with Brad Mehldau, Meshell Ndegeocello, Donny McCaslin, Matisyahu, and the late David Bowie. The New York Times once called him "a drummer around whom a cult of admiration has formed," and that's a fair way to describe how he's built his reputation: less as a bandleader and more as the rhythmic engine behind some of the most distinctive names in jazz and beyond.
Much of his recent work centers on BEAT MUSIC, which he describes as more of a community than a band. Over the last decade, he's gathered a family of like-minded artists around him, all sharing a passion for the possibilities of electronic music combined with the kind of in-the-moment creativity rooted in jazz improvisation. That's the sound he's bringing to the stage: electronic textures meeting live, improvised playing.

It's the latest chapter in that project, and it's the material that will be fresh in the air on the night. Julian Waterfall Pollack opens the bill, and Guiliana takes over from there. The show starts at 8 PM at Soda Bar, 3615 El Cajon Blvd.
