Macramé workshop in the Knot Together series, led by fiber artist Sitoë Thiam, creating knotted treasure pendants.
Sitoë Thiam leads Knot Together at the Mingei International Museum on Friday, October 9, from 5 PM to 7 PM. It's a macramé workshop in the museum's Education Center, and the goal is to turn a small personal talisman—something like a river stone, a piece of sea glass, or a cherished keepsake—into a wearable sculpture. You'll do it by mastering the micro-net, a delicate form of knotting that lets you build a fine mesh around whatever object you bring.
Knot Together is part of the Together workshop series at Mingei, a sequence of hands-on sessions open to makers of all skill levels. The whole series takes its cue from the traditional fishing nets and nautical knots in the museum's To Catch a Fish exhibition, and this one follows Sew Together, Weave Together, Dye Together, Stitch Together, and Clay Together. If you've caught any of the others, you know the vibe: low-pressure, supportive, and more about the process than the perfect result.
Thiam is a fiber artist and mechanical engineer who runs the design studio Unknot, where she works with knotting and weaving through functional design, traditional techniques, and unexpected materials—bridging technical precision with organic expression. She's also a fan of the venue; she calls Mingei her favorite museum in San Diego.
