A comedy show where stand-up comedians perform, followed by improvisers creating scenes based on their material. Rated R for mature situations and language.
Improv VS Stand Up is back at Mockingbird Improv on Saturday, October 10, at 8:30 PM. It's one of the venue's weekly shows, and like the rest of their programming, it runs on audience suggestions to build the night.
The format puts two different styles of comedy on the same stage. First, stand-up comedians take the mic and do their sets. After that, the improvisers step in and take the material from those jokes, spinning and reworking it into scenes. The whole thing is built on the comedians' own material, so the second half is a direct response to what was just said.
On the stand-up side, the show pairs San Diego comedians with guest comics from Los Angeles and beyond. The improvisers then take those jokes and turn them into what they call "jokes on jokes on jokes," taking the original premises and running with them in directions the comedians didn't plan. Since the improvisers are working from the stand-up sets, the night changes depending on who's on the bill.
