A hands-on, family-friendly workshop where participants create a mini ofrenda (altar) for Día de los Muertos, led by artist Ms. Cristy.
San Diego Craft Collective is hosting a Día de los Muertos Ofrenda Workshop on Sunday, October 11, from 10 AM to 12 PM. It's a hands-on session where you'll build your own mini ofrenda—the traditional altar used to honor ancestors during the holiday—and take it home when you're done. The workshop is led by Ms. Cristy, a Mexican-American artist and educator who'll guide you through the process while explaining the meaning behind the tradition.
If you've never made an altar before, that's fine. You'll work with the classic elements: papel picado, cempasúchil flowers, candles, and other special touches that make an ofrenda what it is. The whole thing is framed as a cultural art experience centered on love, family, and remembrance, and it doesn't require any prior experience—all the materials are included, so you just show up and start making. It's family-friendly, too: ages 10 and up are welcome, and kids 5 and up can join if they're with an adult.
There's a bit more to this than just one morning of crafting. The workshop leads into a larger, free, all-ages Día de los Muertos Celebration on Sunday, November 1, at the Dorothea Laub Building in the Arts District of Liberty Station. That one will have calavera cookie decorating, music making, and a procession, so if you make an altar now, you'll have a head start on the celebrations coming later in the fall.
