IMAX documentary film bringing NASA's James Webb Space Telescope images to the screen at the Fleet Science Center.
Deep Sky is playing at the Fleet Science Center throughout October, with a showing on Monday, October 5 at 3 PM. It's an IMAX documentary directed by Nathaniel Kahn and narrated by Michelle Williams, and it brings the images from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope to the big screen. The film takes you back to the beginning of time and space, through cosmic landscapes we've never seen before, and out to recently discovered exoplanets and their distant stars.
Beyond the imagery, the movie follows the global mission to build and launch the telescope into orbit. Along the way, it asks the kinds of questions that have haunted us since the beginning: where did we come from, how did the universe begin, and are we alone? It's a look at the science and the human effort behind the telescope, as much as it is a tour of what the telescope actually sees.
That's where the venue comes in. The film plays in the Eugene Heikoff and Marilyn Jacobs Heikoff Giant Dome Theater, a 76-foot wraparound IMAX dome equipped with IMAX with laser technology. Because the screen wraps around you, the documentary becomes a 360-degree immersive experience rather than something you just watch from a seat. The Fleet Science Center itself is San Diego's science center, a community-focused countywide organization on a mission to create a city where everyone is connected by the power of science to build a better future.
