A workshop series led by attorney Sam Mazzeo providing artists with practical legal knowledge on copyright, contracts, and licensing.
California Lawyers for the Arts is bringing a two-part workshop series to The Woo in Barrio Logan this October, with attorney Sam Mazzeo leading both sessions. It's designed for artists and creatives at any stage of their career, and the whole thing is presented in collaboration with WOO! Studios San Diego and Subcultura.
The first session, Legal 101: The Basics of Art Law, runs from 6 to 7:30 PM on Tuesday, October 6. Mazzeo covers the foundational stuff: copyright, intellectual property, ownership, fair use, and trademarks. It's the kind of ground you usually only think about once you've already made something you're worried about losing, so it's a good place to start if you've never really looked into how your work is protected.
The second session, Contracts, Agreements & Licensing, follows on Tuesday, October 20, also from 6 to 7:30 PM. This one gets into the more practical, day-to-day side of the business: contracts, licensing, and how to handle negotiations. It also touches on when it's time to stop winging it and actually seek legal support. Between the two nights, you get a look at both the high-level rules of who owns what and the actual paperwork that governs how you get paid for it.
