First exhibition dedicated to Cecil Beaton's fashion and portrait photography at the San Diego Museum of Art, showcasing images that defined twentieth-century style and glamour.
Cecil Beaton's Fashionable World is open now at the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) at The San Diego Museum of Art, in Balboa Park. Organized by The National Portrait Gallery in London, it's the first exhibition to focus entirely on Beaton's fashion and portrait photography—the images that helped define the look of twentieth-century style, celebrity, and high society.
Beaton (1904-1980) was far more than just a photographer. He was a fashion illustrator, an Oscar-winning costume designer, a social caricaturist, and a writer, and he worked across both the British and American creative scenes. In 1920s London, he helped shape the public image of the 'Bright Young Things'; he shot fashion for Vogue; he served as a photographer during World War II; and later, he reinvented royal portraiture. His costume and set designs for My Fair Lady won him an Oscar. The show presents him not just as a photographer of famous faces, but as a visual architect of glamour itself.
The portraits on display bring together a wide range of figures: Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Queen Elizabeth II, and Princess Margaret, alongside Truman Capote, Francis Bacon, and Salvador Dalí. It's a good look at how he moved between the royal court and the Hollywood set.
