Solo concert by Benmont Tench, founding member of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, at Music Box SD.
Benmont Tench plays Music Box SD on Tuesday, October 13, in a solo set. If you've spent any time listening to rock and roots music over the last few decades, you've heard his work, even if you didn't know it was him. He was a founding member of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, and he's widely considered one of contemporary music's finest organ and piano players.
Beyond the Heartbreakers, Tench has played on records by Stevie Nicks, Willie Nelson, Green Day, Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, the Dixie Chicks, the Replacements, John Prine, Waylon Jennings, John Fogerty, Elvis Costello, the Rolling Stones, and Johnny Cash. That's a long list of names, and it covers a lot of ground—from heartland rock and outlaw country to punk and the blues. Producer Jimmy Iovine once put it this way: "If you want a track to sound better, you just put Benmont's part higher in the mix."
He's also putting out his own music. His second solo LP, The Melancholy Season, came out March 7, 2024, on Dark Horse Records and was produced by Jonathan Wilson. This show is billed as a solo performance, so it'll be Tench on his own rather than with a full band behind him.
