San Diego’s October museum calendar still has several free-admission dates ahead as of Friday, October 9, 2026. The next one is Sunday, October 11, when the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum offers free admission on its second Sunday. Children under 12 are free on paid days, while seniors 65 and older and groups of 10 or more receive a $2 discount when admission is charged. The Gaslamp Museum at the Davis-Horton House also has its resident-free Thursday on October 8, but that date has already passed; its monthly offer is for San Diego County residents who bring photo ID showing a county address.

Balboa Park’s remaining resident days are spread across the month. On Tuesday, October 20, the San Diego Museum of Art offers free admission to residents, although special exhibitions are excluded. Current students and military members may also qualify with valid ID, and visitors 17 and under receive free admission. The Japanese Friendship Garden has a resident-free Tuesday on the same date; for that day, it closes at 5 PM, with last entry at 4 PM. The Mingei International Museum has several standing free-admission categories, including active-duty military and their families, children 18 and under, and EBT cardholders. Its Commons Level is free to everyone.
The final listed Balboa Park date is Tuesday, October 27. The San Diego Automotive Museum is free for San Diego County residents from 10 AM to 3:30 PM with proof of residence. Individual visitors do not need reservations, though they are strongly recommended, and organizations need confirmed reservations. The Museum of Us also offers free admission that day to City and County of San Diego residents, active-duty military members, and their dependents. Bring photo ID or proof of residence; the free admission does not include the California Tower.
There are also free options outside the rotating schedule. The Timken Museum of Art in Balboa Park has free admission year-round and is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM. The Barona Cultural Center & Museum, Visions Museum of Textile Art, Nautical History Gallery & Museum, Institute of Contemporary Art San Diego, and Coronado Historical Association also offer free admission, with some accepting donations or asking visitors to verify gallery hours. The San Diego History Center uses a suggested-donation model, while the Bonita Museum & Cultural Center is pay-what-you-wish.
October also includes Kids Free, with free admission for children 12 and under at more than 70 participating museums and cultural attractions when accompanied by a paying adult. Rules vary by location. San Diego Public Library cardholders can also check the Discover & Go program, which lets them reserve family day passes to participating attractions online, in person, or by phone.
For any free museum day, check the individual museum’s hours and admission rules before leaving. Some offers exclude films, special exhibitions, guided tours, or other add-ons, and Balboa Park now has paid parking throughout the park, introduced on January 5, 2026. Arriving early is useful when a popular free day draws a larger crowd.
