October is a good month for family outings that won't cost much, and the Kids Free in October program makes it easier to plan a few of them. From October 1 through October 31, children 12 and under get in free when they go with a paid adult to more than 70 museums, historic sites, aquariums, gardens, and other attractions across San Diego County. According to the Museum Council's program page, the initiative is backed by several public and private partners. The list is long, so it helps to start from what your kids already enjoy.

For science and animal fans, the Fleet Science Center, the San Diego Natural History Museum, and the Children's Museum of Discovery are all on the list, along with the Living Coast Discovery Center and the San Diego Botanic Garden. Birch Aquarium at Scripps is also included, but it requires advance reservations, so you'll want to book before you go. Families who prefer green spaces can also visit the Japanese Friendship Garden & Museum and the Water Conservation Garden. Balboa Park, a 1,200-acre public park and cultural center, has several playgrounds and gardens, including Palm Canyon and the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden, which has about 1,600 roses.
If history or machines are more your thing, the lineup includes the USS Midway Museum, the Maritime Museum of San Diego, the San Diego Air & Space Museum, the Comic-Con Museum, and the Miniature Engineering Craftsmanship Museum. The Cabrillo National Monument is on the list as well. Outside the museums, the San Diego Zoo lets children 11 and under in free, up to five per paying adult, and it's open today from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. October also brings HalGLOWeen events on weekends at the zoo, while the events calendar on San Diego Family lists Movie Nights at the Museum.
A few fine points are worth knowing before you go. Some museums charge extra for special exhibitions, programs, or films, and some limit the offer to once per month per guest. Balboa Park Explorer Passes, CityPass, and Go San Diego Passes don't count for Kids Free, and a Go San Diego Pass usually doesn't count as the paid adult admission, so it's a good idea to call the museum ahead of time. Coupons can't be combined with other offers. Checking each venue's website or phone line before you head out is the simplest way to avoid surprises at the front desk.
