If you want to try pottery in San Diego without committing to a long course, Cone 6 Ceramics offers a straightforward introduction. This Latina- and women-owned studio opened at Mercado Del Barrio in 2022 after starting in a garage with five wheels and one kiln. Today, the space at 1985 National Ave, Suites 1119 & 1121, has 14 throwing wheels, three hand-building tables, a slab roller, shelf space, and two kilns. The name refers to the cone 6 firing temperature, about 1,000°C (1,832°F).

The easiest starting point is Pottery Basics, a 90-minute wheel-throwing session with 30 minutes of instruction and hands-on practice. It costs $50, and firing is included. Clay and tools are provided for guided sessions, including B-mix clay and access to nine Laguna dipping glazes in the studio. Finished pieces are fired, glazed, and ready for pickup in about four to six weeks; the studio holds them for two weeks after notifying you. Wheel classes are for ages 13 and up, while hand-building starts at age 9.
For a more social visit, Cone 6 Ceramics runs workshops such as Monster Planters, Mugs and Tumblers, Holiday Dishes, and Casserole Dishes. As of October 5, 2026, the October 10 Monster Planters and October 17 Mugs and Tumblers sessions are upcoming, both at 3:00 PM; the November workshops are scheduled for November 7 and 14. Private options include wheel-throwing events for ages 13+, hand-building events for ages 9+, Paint Your Own Pottery at $50 per person, and private lessons priced at $140 for one person or $240 for two people per two-hour session. The studio also offers memberships and firing plans for experienced ceramicists, but it does not offer public single-day drop-ins or guest passes.
