A jazz quartet reimagines Beatles classics in a jazz setting at the Jazz, TX venue in San Antonio.
Jazz, TX turns into a Beatles room for the night on Tuesday, October 13, with With a Little Help from Our Friends: The Music of the Beatles. The show starts at 7:30 PM, and the set is built around the Beatles songbook treated as jazz standards. The quartet works through songs like "Day Tripper," "Come Together," and "All You Need Is Love" the way a jazz group handles a standard—taking the melodies everyone knows and stretching them out into something new.
On stage are Adam Carrillo on saxophone, Brandon Guerra on drums and on the mic, Mike Porter on bass, and Chris Vu on piano. It's a straightforward jazz quartet, so the focus stays on the playing rather than any big production. The songs are the starting point, and the four of them take it from there.
For those who haven't spent much time there, Jazz, TX is a San Antonio music venue envisioned by local musician Brent "Doc" Watkins, built to combine the class of an upscale jazz club with the grit of a traditional Texas dancehall. It sits in the cellar of the Bottling Department at the historic Pearl, a 3,500-square-foot room that books jazz, blues, big band, Texas swing, salsa, conjunto, and Americana, and stages performances by many of the region's favorites, Doc Watkins himself among them. The kitchen and bar remain open for dinner service throughout the night, so you can eat and drink while the music is going.
