Adaptive arts education program for young adults with intellectual disabilities that combines storytelling, music and dance.
We Gather Together is coming to the McNutt Co-Lab in the Negley Building on Thursday, November 19. It's an adaptive arts education program for young adults with intellectual disabilities, and the performance brings together storytelling, music, and dance.
That's the core of it: three different ways of telling a story happening at once. The storytelling provides the narrative, the music sets the mood, and the dance gives it a physical presence. When you see it, you're watching those three things work together rather than one taking the lead while the others just hang around in the background. It's a performance built around the idea of different artistic voices coming together in the same space.
The program is designed for young adults with intellectual disabilities, and the "adaptive" part of the title means the teaching and the performance are tailored to meet the artists where they are. That's the whole point of the workβmaking room for people to express themselves through art on their own terms. The result is a show that's as much about the process of creating it as it is about the final performance.
