The Orchestra San Antonio presents Beethoven's Symphony No. 8 and the incidental music Egmont, conducted by Leonardo Pineda with soprano Chelsea Helm.
The Orchestra San Antonio brings Ludwig the Great to the H-E-B Performance Hall at the Tobin Center on Saturday, May 1, 2027. It's a Beethoven night, and the program pairs two very different sides of the composer: the Symphony No. 8 in F major, Op. 93, and the incidental music Egmont, Op. 84. The symphony is Beethoven at his most playful and inventive, while Egmont is a dramatic piece that tells a story of courage and sacrifice. The concert falls during the bicentenary of Beethoven's death, and the orchestra frames his music as a living testament to resilience, individuality, and the human spirit.
On the podium is Venezuelan conductor Leonardo Pineda, who took over as music director in October 2025 after guest appearances that drew standing ovations. He also teaches at Bard College. Soprano Chelsea Helm joins him on stage for the evening. The Orchestra San Antonio has been the resident company at the Tobin Center since 2014, operating under the Classical Music Institute. It shares the building with fellow residents OPERA San Antonio and Ballet San Antonio, and its work runs through three branches: Chamber Connexions, the education program Ascend, and its signature summer celebration, The 210 Festival.
There's also some news about the orchestra's future. Frost Bank has pledged $2 million—its largest single donation—to fund programming through the 2029-2030 season. That's a good chunk of runway for the ensemble to keep building out its calendar.
