An exhibition presented by the Mexican American Civil Rights Institute (MACRI) that explores Mexican American civil rights history as part of the America250 commemoration.
Somos Americanos: Our American Story is on display at the Mexican American Civil Rights Institute (MACRI) in San Antonio, where it runs from July 2 through December 18, 2026. It's presented by MACRI, the nation's first museum and archive focused on Mexican American civil rights history, based here in San Antonio—the Mexican American cultural capital of the United States. The institute collects, preserves, and shares that history through research, educational programs, and public exhibitions.
This particular exhibition is part of the America250 commemoration, and it looks at how Mexican Americans have lived out the nation's highest democratic ideals through public service, civic leadership, and acts of valor. It follows trailblazers from the battlefield to the halls of justice, from classrooms to boardrooms, and its central premise is that Mexican American history is American history. If you've spent any time in this city, you know how deeply that history is woven into the streets and the people here, and this exhibition puts a spotlight on the specific roles Mexican Americans have played in shaping the country.
MACRI is the one behind it, and they're more than just a gallery—they're a working archive that keeps this history alive through research and education. This exhibition is one of the public-facing ways they do that, bringing those stories out of the archives and into the room for anyone to walk through.
