Exhibition of John Dyer's photographs of Selena Quintanilla at the Briscoe Western Art Museum, featuring monumental portraits, boutique images and magazine covers.
Selena Forever | Siempre Selena is running at the Briscoe Western Art Museum on the San Antonio River Walk, with the exhibition open in the Kate Marmion Gallery from June 4, 2026, through January 4, 2027. It brings together the work of Texas photographer John Dyer, who shot Selena Quintanilla-Pérez between 1992 and 1994, right as she was climbing toward international stardom. The show is billed as the most complete and comprehensive collection of large-scale Selena portraits ever presented, and it's built around eight monumental photographs. Those big portraits are paired with eight boutique images, five magazine covers, and various pieces of ephemera, some of which have never been seen before.
Dyer remembers Selena showing up to their session with almost every outfit she owned packed into the boot of her red hatchback. He says he hardly had to direct her: she simply lit up for the camera. The exhibition frames her not only as a music icon but as a groundbreaking Tejana whose talent, charisma, and determination transformed Tejano music and redefined representation for Mexican American women in popular culture. It's a look at her during a specific window of her career, captured by a Texas photographer who saw her at the height of that rise.

The Briscoe, located in the city's former 1930s public library building, has paired the exhibition with two other programs. There's the Siempre Tejano film series and the bilingual Tejano Legacy: Another American Origin Story. If you're planning to spend a full afternoon there, you can work your way through the portraits, the films, and the legacy exhibit in one go. The show runs through January 4, 2027, so you've got plenty of time to catch it.
