A children's art activity exploring Andean textile traditions and creating small-scale artwork for ages 0-5.
The San Antonio Museum of Art is hosting Tiny Patterns, Big Stories on Wednesday, November 11, a Kids' Studio activity for children ages 0 to 5. It's a hands-on session that looks at Andean textile traditions, and the kids spend the time making their own small-scale artwork. If you've got a little one who likes to create, this is a good way to get them into a museum setting while they're actually doing something with their hands.
Andean textiles are a great starting point for this age group because they're so visual. The patterns are bold and repetitive, and the colors are bright, which makes them easy for young kids to recognize and play with. The session takes those traditions and scales them down, so the kids can make their own versions on a small scale. It's less about the history lesson and more about the act of making.
SAMA is a good spot for a family outing, too. The museum is housed in a historic brewery along the Museum Reach of the Riverwalk, so you can easily make a day of it. Its permanent collections run from Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities to Asian art, Latin American art, contemporary art and American paintings, so there's plenty to look at before or after the activity. If you're planning to come back on other days, the museum offers free general admission every Tuesday from 4 to 7 PM and Sunday from 10 AM to noon.

Tiny Patterns, Big Stories is free, and it's geared toward the 0-to-5 crowd, so it's a low-stakes way to introduce a toddler or preschooler to the museum. The session is on Wednesday, November 11, at the San Antonio Museum of Art.
