Concert by the genre-bending singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jackie Venson, with support from Chavela.
Jackie Venson plays the Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater at The Tobin Center on Friday, November 13, with support from Chavela. It's a one-night-only show, so this is the only time she'll be in town this run.
If you're not familiar, Venson is an Austin native who's spent the last decade and a half building a reputation as one of the most formidable guitarists of her generation. She started as a classical pianist and graduated from Berklee College of Music, but in 2011 she made the switch to electric guitar. From there, she's put out five studio albums and six live recordings, including an acclaimed Austin City Limits taping. She's shared stages with Gary Clark Jr., Melissa Etheridge, Alanis Morissette, and Lainey Wilson.
Her sound is hard to pin to one spot. It fuses blues rock, soul, and electro-funk, and she often brings in her DJ alter-ego, jackie the robot, to layer in electronic elements. She's known for technical precision, a smoky voice, and her use of live looping and synthesizers, which lets her build out a full sound on her own. Rolling Stone called her an "artist to watch," and Forbes described her as an "Austin legend in the making."
