Artist talk with Ann Enzminger, moderated by Gary Sweeney, discussing the exhibition 'I've Had an Out of Body Experience' and themes of urban renewal and displacement.
Ann Enzminger is talking about her new exhibition, I've Had an Out of Body Experience, at Flight Gallery on Thursday, October 15. The conversation is moderated by San Antonio artist Gary Sweeney, and it serves as the opening for the show.
Enzminger's work looks back at the neighborhood that was demolished to make room for HemisFair '68, the world's fair that San Antonio hosted in 1968. More than 1,600 residents were displaced in the process. She built the exhibition from archival research and personal histories, working across painting, fiber, and installation. She also included reimagined HemisFair souvenirs, turning the kind of trinkets people took home from the fair into something that points back to what was cleared away to build it.
From there, the show touches on urban renewal, displacement, and collective memoryβand the complicated legacy of civic progress in San Antonio. The talk with Gary Sweeney will consider not only what was lost when HemisFair was created, but how the decisions cities make about progress continue to shape the people and places within them. If you've spent any time thinking about how this city has changed over the decades, that's the conversation this one is aiming for.
