Local students share original poetry, prose and music imagining a day without water, followed by a guided walk along San Pedro Springs.
Imagine a Day without Water comes to the San Pedro Branch Library on Thursday, October 15, as part of a global annual observation. The afternoon is put on by the Gardening Volunteers of South Texas together with the library, and the whole thing is built around a single prompt: imagining a world without water.
From 4 PM to 6 PM, the library's outdoor patio becomes a stage for local students—ranging from elementary school through university—who've written original poetry, prose, and music on the theme. It's a wide age gap on one stage, so you'll hear a mix of voices and styles all working from the same starting point. The session is held on the patio behind the library at 1315 San Pedro Avenue, and if the weather doesn't cooperate, they'll move it to a nearby indoor location.
Once the performances wrap at 6 PM, the afternoon shifts from the page to the ground. The group sets out from that same patio for a walk along San Pedro Springs, led by Gregg Eckhardt. It's a natural follow-up to the first half: after spending a couple of hours imagining what happens when the water goes away, you get to walk right alongside one of the city's actual springs.
