A hands-on workshop where participants create metalwork-inspired jewelry or decorative pieces inspired by the Etruscans.
The San Antonio Museum of Art is hosting First Tuesday: Etruscan Metalwork on Tuesday, November 3, starting at 5 PM. It's a hands-on session where you can try your hand at creating jewelry or a decorative piece inspired by the metalwork of the Etruscans, the ancient civilization that lived in what is now Tuscany and central Italy before Rome took over.
If you're not familiar with the museum, it's housed in a historic brewery along the Museum Reach of the Riverwalk. The permanent collections there run from Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities to Asian art, Latin American art, contemporary art and American paintings, so there's plenty to see beyond the workshop. The Etruscans were particularly known for their gold work and bronze casting, and this session lets you work with those same kinds of forms rather than just looking at them behind glass.
It's part of the museum's First Tuesday series, which falls on the first Tuesday of the month. The workshop itself kicks off at 5 PM, and it's free to attend. If you're planning to make a day of it, keep in mind that the museum offers free general admission every Tuesday from 4 to 7 PM and on Sundays from 10 AM to noon, so you can walk through the galleries before or after you make your piece.
