A celebration of the Day of the Dead tradition featuring pan de muerto, calaveras and ofrendas to honour departed loved ones at La Panadería.
La Panadería is celebrating Día de los Muertos across its San Antonio locations from October 15 through November 2, 2026. The bakery's take on the holiday centers on the things that make it recognizable: pan de muerto, calaveras, and altares built to honor the dead.
If you're not familiar with the tradition, Día de los Muertos—the Day of the Dead—is a Mexican and Mexican American holiday for remembering loved ones who've passed. It's less about mourning and more about bringing families and communities together through ofrendas, favorite foods, music, art, storytelling, and joyful gatherings. In San Antonio, the celebration draws on the city's deep Mexican American roots and shows up in river parades, community celebrations, public altars, live performances, and art installations. Ofrendas are the altars built to welcome and honor the departed, usually dressed with photographs, candles, marigolds, papel picado, and personal items. Alebrijes—the brightly colored Mexican folk-art sculptures inspired by animals and mythical creatures—also appear across the city during the season.
La Panadería fits right into that. The bakery was opened in San Antonio in 2014 by brothers José and David Cáceres, who wanted to share their Mexican heritage with people living in the U.S. For this celebration, they're leaning into the food side of the holiday. Pan de muerto is the traditional "bread of the dead" that gives the event its name, and you'll find it alongside calaveras—the sugar skulls that are a hallmark of the season. The bakery also sets up altares to honor the departed, keeping the tradition of the ofrenda front and center.
