Four-day Día de los Muertos celebration with costume contests, live DJ sets, mariachis and face painting at Mezquite.
Mezquite is hosting a four-day Día de los Muertos celebration starting Friday, October 23, in San Antonio. The lineup runs through the weekend with costume contests, live DJ sets, mariachis and face painting. It's a free event, so you can drop in whenever you've got a gap in your schedule.
If you're not familiar with the holiday, Día de los Muertos—the Day of the Dead—is an annual tradition rooted in Mexico and Central America. It blends indigenous Mesoamerican and Spanish Catholic practices into something that's as much about memory as it is about celebration. At its heart are the altares and ofrendas, altars decorated with candles, incense and cempasúchiles—the marigolds whose scent is said to guide spirits back to the world of the living. Beyond the altars, the holiday is about the gathering of family and community, which is where it gets its real meaning.
Mezquite takes that community side and stretches it into a four-day run. The costume contests give you a reason to dress up, the live DJ sets keep things moving, and the mariachis bring the music. Face painting is on hand too, so you can lean into the tradition with some skull makeup if that's your thing. Between the different elements, there's plenty to do whether you're there for one afternoon or coming back across several days.
