A chamber music concert by Chamber Connexions featuring works by J.S. Bach, set in the imagined world of Bach's Leipzig and retelling the Christmas story.
Chamber Connexions takes the stage at the Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater on Wednesday, December 9, for Christmas Baroque Brilliance: A Christmas Story in Bach's Leipzig. It's a night dedicated entirely to J.S. Bach, with the program tracing the Christmas story through his music.
The set list pulls from several different sides of Bach's output. You'll hear the Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 582, and the Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 in B-flat major, BWV 1051. There's the Cello Suite No. 3 in C major, BWV 1009, and the Trio Sonata No. 6 in G major, BWV 530. The more intimate side comes through in the chorale prelude Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, BWV 639, and the Harpsichord Concerto in A major, BWV 1055. The program and the artists are subject to change, but that's the lineup as it stands.
The whole thing is framed around an imagined version of Bach's Leipzig—a city and a season where music filled every corner, from the church to the home and out into the village. The concert retells the Christmas story through Bach's lens, with equal parts brightness and profundity. Chamber Connexions (CCX) describes its mission as enriching San Antonio's cultural scene through the transformative power of chamber music, programming traditional masterpieces alongside new works and pairing world-class musicians with local and international artists, all rounded out with educational initiatives.
