Intimate evening of songwriting and storytelling with Lisa Morales and special guests David Hidalgo and John Doe.
Lisa Morales plays the Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater at the Tobin Center on Sunday, October 18, with David Hidalgo and John Doe joining her. It's billed as an intimate evening of songwriting and storytelling, stripped down and deeply personal, and the three artists on the bill come from different corners of American roots music.
Morales brings a sound rooted in Mexican heritage, soul, folk, blues and Americana. She first gained recognition as one half of the duo Sisters Morales, a staple across the Southwest from the 1980s through the early 2000s, and Rolling Stone once called her one of the most multifaceted artists to watch. David Hidalgo, a founding member of Los Lobos, is a celebrated multi-instrumentalist whose work ranges from rock and folk to Mexican-American influences, and who has collaborated with Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Bonnie Raitt and Dolly Parton. John Doe, co-founder of X, is known for raw, narrative-driven songwriting that blends punk roots with Americana and folk, and for decades of influence as both a solo artist and collaborator.
Between the three of them, the night pulls from a wide stretch of American music: Mexican-American roots, soul, folk, blues, and punk. The stripped-down format puts the songwriting and the storytelling at the center, with each artist bringing their own background to the stage. It's a lineup that spans generations of roots music, and seeing them together in one room is a good way to hear how those different threads connect.
