Human-powered chariot race judged on design, performance and showmanship, with free spectator access and team applications.
The Red Bull Chariot Race is coming to Sugar House Park on Friday, October 30, starting at 2 PM. It's a human-powered race where teams build their own chariots from scratch and then push them through a course that's not just a straight shot—it's narrow, with obstacles and puzzles along the way. The whole thing is free to watch, so you can just show up and see how these homemade contraptions hold up under pressure.
If you're thinking about entering, here's how it works: you field a crew of four, with three on the course at a time and a fourth swapping in halfway through. The chariots have to be powered by the team's legs only—no external energy allowed—and they can't exceed 4 feet wide, 5 feet long including handlebars, and 4 feet high, with a maximum weight of 175 pounds excluding the rider. Safety helmets are provided and must be worn. The race is judged on three criteria: design, pre-race performance, and showmanship, so it's as much about the look and the energy as it is about the speed.

Support teams get a $200 gift card stipend and the option of build coaching to help get their chariots off the ground. Entry is by application, with a limit of one per team. If you'd rather just watch, the race is free to spectate, and the course runs through Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City. It kicks off at 2 PM on October 30.
