A cabaret celebrating the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, with audience members encouraged to dress in costume.
Theatre Raleigh is bringing a cabaret celebrating the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber to its Cabaret Theatre on Sunday, October 18, at 7 PM. It's called TR Sings... Andrew Lloyd Webber: A Theatrical Costume Party, and the title isn't just for showβthey're encouraging the audience to dress up in costume, too.
The evening focuses on Lloyd Webber, one of Broadway's most recognized composers. You'll hear music from his biggest shows, including The Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Cats. The costume part is meant to let you step into that musical landscape, whether you go as a specific character or just lean into the theatrical side of things.
It's worth knowing who's putting this on. Theatre Raleigh is a professional, non-profit company here in Raleigh with a stated commitment to inclusion and diversity. Its roots go back to 2005, when K.D. Kennedy Jr. and his son Michael started a Hot Summer Nights theatre series at the Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts. In 2008, Kennedy's daughter, Broadway performer Lauren Kennedy Brady, took over as artistic director. She studied at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and appeared on Broadway in Sunset Boulevard, Side Show, Les Miserables, and Spamalot. In June 2020, she moved the company to North Raleigh, converting an 18,000-square-foot space into a performing-arts hub.
