Special Event: Tony Roberts

Tony Roberts is playing Goodnights Comedy Club in Raleigh for three nights in November: Friday the 20th, Saturday the 21st, and Sunday the 22nd. He's a stand-up comic with a long road behind him, and this is a full weekend of shows rather than a one-off.

Roberts grew up in Detroit, raised by his mother, Annette, alongside his younger siblings Yvette and Terry. He graduated from Henry Ford High School in 1981 with his lifelong friend and manager, Perry Conway, and got his start on stage at Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle in Royal Oak, Michigan. One of the early things that stuck with him came from a fan after he appeared on BET's ComicView: a gold chain with a microphone that he still wears to every performance.

Since then, his credits have run through some of the biggest names in comedy. He's been on HBO's Def Comedy Jam, BET's ComicView, and It's Showtime at the Apollo, and he was selected for the HBO US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen in February 2006. He's toured with the BET Comedy Tour, Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam Tour, and the USO Tour, and he took home the BET Robin Harris Award for Most Original Comic. Outside of stand-up, he's appeared in films like A Get2gether, Death of a Dynasty, and Gangsta Rap, and he released the special Wired.

He's playing three nights in a row, so you've got a few options for when to catch him. Friday, November 20, runs from 7 PM to 9:15 PM; Saturday, November 21, is 7 PM to 9:30 PM; and Sunday, November 22, starts at 7 PM. Goodnights is an 18+ venue, so keep that in mind if you're bringing anyone younger.
