A blackgaze concert featuring Sadness, joined by Barbelith and Monterey, at Chapel of Bones.
Sadness plays Chapel of Bones on Saturday, October 10, with Barbelith and Monterey joining them. It's a three-band bill that stays in the same general neighborhood all night: post-black metal and blackgaze. If you're not familiar with the terms, they're basically what happens when you take the harshness of black metal and stretch it out with the atmospheric, melodic side of post-rock and shoegaze.
Sadness comes in from Baltimore, Maryland. They describe their sound as sitting at the intersection of post-rock, post-black metal, and blackgaze, and that's a pretty accurate way of putting it. The black metal provides the weight and the distorted edges, while the shoegaze brings in the wash of sound and the melody. The result is a set of immersive soundscapes that balance heaviness with a haunting kind of beauty, and the whole thing is built around emotional, layered textures rather than just riffs and beats.
They aren't the only ones playing in that vein. Barbelith brings expansive blackened post-metal to the bill, and Monterey adds emotionally charged post-black metal. Between the three of them, the night moves through powerful melodies, layered textures, and a fair amount of cathartic intensity. It's a consistent run of music, with each band working from a similar set of influences.
