A weekly guided walking tour of downtown Raleigh exploring the history and contributions of the city's African American community.
The Raleigh African American History Tour runs every Sunday afternoon in downtown Raleigh, starting at Jimmy V's Osteria + Bar at 420 Fayetteville Street. It's a walking tour led by a local historian, and it takes you through the city's center, following the stories of Raleigh's African American community.
What makes this one stand out is that it doesn't stick to a single narrative. Instead, it sketches a portrait of the people who came up in the city's Black neighborhoods and left their mark on the state and the country. The tour highlights educators, engineers, political leaders, medical scientists, military officers, doctors, architects, academics, entrepreneurs, activists, and politicians—a wide range of careers and roles that together show the breadth of the community's contribution.
Because it's a walking tour, you'll be moving through the streets of downtown rather than sitting in one place, so you'll see the city from a different angle as you go. It's designed as a weekly Sunday walk, which makes it easy to fit into a weekend without having to clear your whole day.
