Five-week hands-on course led by Bryce Lane on how to identify trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants by their leaves, stems, buds, flowers and fruits.
Plant ID for the Home Gardener: Fall Edition kicks off at the JC Raulston Arboretum on Monday, October 19. It's a five-week course led by Bryce Lane, former host of In the Garden With Bryce Lane, and it treats plant identification as both an art and a science. Rather than just memorizing names, you'll learn to examine leaves, stems, buds, flowers, fruits and branching patterns to identify trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants, and to use today's plant identification apps, digital keys and landscape planning tools alongside your own knowledge.
The class runs on Monday evenings from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, with sessions on October 19, 23 and 26, and November 2. You can join in person at the arboretum, 4415 Beryl Road in Raleigh, or follow along virtually. It's part of the arboretum's weekly series of hands-on workshops and classes for gardeners of all experience levels, which sits alongside three signature programs: Intro to Gardening in the South for beginners new to gardening in the Southeast, the Winter Symposium each February and the Southeastern Plant Symposium each June.
