A guided tour and meditation session led by artist Maya Freelon around the exhibition Grounded at the Gregg Museum.
Maya Freelon is leading a guided tour and meditation at the Gregg Museum of Art & Design on Thursday, October 29, from 3 PM to 4 PM. The session walks through Grounded, an immersive exhibition that traces two decades of Freelon's work, built around her signature use of vibrant color and layered tissue paper inspired by her maternal grandmother.
It's a family affair in the galleries. Freelon's work sits alongside art by her father, the architect Phil Freelon, and by her great-grandfather, Allan Freelon Sr., a pioneering African American Impressionist painter of the Harlem Renaissance. Phil Freelon, an NC State College of Design alumnus and principal architect of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, also designed the museum's contemporary building, which occupies the 1927 Chancellor's Residence, a Georgian mansion renovated in 2017 by the Freelon Group. Raised in Durham and formerly a teacher at the College of Design, Freelon is the museum's 2026 Artist-in-Residence.
