A wellness session where students engage in board games, role-playing games and virtual reality to promote emotional wellness, social skills and personal growth.
Game for Growth kicks off at the Talley Student Union on Wednesday, October 14, and it's a series that stretches well into the fall. The Counseling Center is running these sessions on Wednesdays from 3:00 to 4:30 PM, with dates on October 14, 18, 21, and 28, and then November 4, 11, and 18. It's open to all NC State students, so you can drop in for one afternoon or keep coming back throughout the semester.
The whole thing is built around board games, role-playing games, and virtual reality. The Counseling Center describes it as a way to work on emotional wellness, social skills, and personal growth in a supportive environment that encourages self-expression through play. The idea is that playing helps you build confidence and healthy peer relationships, and the sessions are designed to be a low-pressure way to connect with other people. You can bring your own games or play what the center has on hand, and you're welcome to come alone or with a friend.
There's also a game-like element to the program itself: you can complete wellness challenges to earn tokens, which you can then trade in for prizes. It's a good way to spend a Wednesday afternoon if you're looking for something a bit more social than a study session, and since it runs over several weeks, you don't have to worry about missing one.
