Undergraduate researchers present their projects and creative works to a lay audience in five minutes, highlighting the spooky aspects of their work.
The Fall Spooky Research Slam comes to the D.H. Hill Jr. Library on Thursday, October 29, from 4:30 to 6:00 PM. It's a joint production by the Office of Undergraduate Research and the NC State University Libraries, and it's open to the wider NC State community.
The format is a pitch: undergraduate researchers present their projects and creative works to a lay audience. Each person gets five minutes and five slides to get their point across. The twist is in the title—they're challenged to highlight the spooky aspects of their work in fun and creative ways. It's a chance to see what students are actually working on, stripped of the academic jargon and framed for a general crowd. The presentations run one after another, and when they're done, the floor opens up for questions and socializing over refreshments.
If you're a student who's been too intimidated to start your own research, this is a good place to begin. The organizers specifically encourage people in that boat to come along and pick up some advice on how to get off the ground. You'll see a range of projects and hear how other students approached theirs, which can make the whole thing feel a lot more doable.
