Opening lecture with Nubiologists Caroline Rocheleau and Geoff Emberling on their work at sites in Sudan, with a reception.
Caroline Rocheleau and Geoff Emberling are coming to the NCMA on Friday, October 16, for a talk that opens the museum's new exhibition, Ancient Nubia: Excavating Treasures of the Nile. The lecture runs from 12 PM to 2 PM in the East Building's SECU Auditorium, with a reception from 11 AM to noon right before it starts.
The exhibition itself is on loan from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and it puts the Kingdom of Kush in the spotlight. Kush was a powerful civilization of the Middle Nile Valley, and the show draws on materials unearthed more than a century ago during the Harvard University - Boston Museum of Fine Arts Expedition. Those finds span nearly 3,000 years across the kingdom's three main historical periods, so there's a lot of ground to cover.
Rocheleau and Emberling are both Nubiologists, and they'll be talking about their own work at different sites in Sudan. They'll walk through what led them to Nubia, the excavations they've led, the discoveries they've made, and how they engage with the local community. It's a good way to get some context on the exhibition before you spend time with the objects themselves.
