Interactive workshop series on bike commuting with route planning, gear review, and a group ride from Dix to downtown.
Oaks and Spokes are hosting Bike Commuting 101 at The Chapel at Dix Park on October 22 and October 29, a two-part workshop series for anyone who's felt a bit intimidated by Raleigh's bike infrastructure. Both sessions run from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, and they're free to attend.
The first night, Route Planning & Wayfinding, is an interactive class on route-making platforms and what actually makes a good personal route, with group exercises to get you working through it. The second, Don't Pollute the Commute, covers commuting gear, how to take a bike on the bus or train, and safe riding behaviors, followed by a short group commute from the park to downtown. The series is part of Oaks and Spokes' Biketober Workshop Series.
Oaks and Spokes does more than just workshops: they run the Raleigh Community Kickstand, a free bike-repair and maintenance resource, and they're regular participants in Raleigh Critical Mass and Kidical Mass. The venue, Dix Park, is a 308-acre park on the edge of downtown that blends historic architecture with rolling hills, huge shade trees, and views of the Raleigh skyline. The Chapel is located at 2105 Umstead Dr. in West Raleigh.
