An intimate artist talk with ariana Farquharson offering a behind-the-scenes look at her exhibition 'You Are Here: Geolocating the Self through the Familiar in the Midst of the Unfamiliar'.
ariana Farquharson is hosting an artist talk at the African American Cultural Center on Wednesday, November 11, from 6 PM to 7:30 PM. It's a behind-the-scenes look at the personal narratives and techniques that shaped her exhibition, You Are Here: Geolocating the Self through the Familiar in the Midst of the Unfamiliar, which runs at the center from October 28, 2026, to February 28, 2027.
Farquharson is a digital humanist and creative storyteller, a faculty member in the College of Design at NC State, and a former teaching assistant to artist Maya Freelon. The show, presented by Arts NC State and the Gregg Museum of Art & Design, was created in conversation with Freelon's immersive installation Grounded. It fills the gallery with 2D prints, 3D prints, and animations of AI-generated abstract forms Farquharson calls "diasporic wayfields," which she says draw on ancestral notions of inherited and inhabited fluidity and invite visitors to locate self and home, expanding on Freelon's own exploration of her origins.
Since the exhibition stays up through February, you can see the work before or after the talk. The evening itself is an intimate conversation where Farquharson walks through the personal stories and the technical process that went into the pieces. It's a good chance to hear her explain how the AI-generated forms connect back to those ideas of ancestry and home.
