A monthly silent book club and communal reading session with snacks, tea, coffee and bookish prizes.
The African American Cultural Center Library is hosting its monthly Readers Lounge on Wednesday, October 14, from 4 PM to 6 PM. It's a silent book club and communal reading session, which is a nice way to put it: you bring your own book, find a cozy corner with a blanket, and read alongside other people. If you don't have a book with you, you can browse the library's collection or take a suggestion from the librarian. There are snacks, tea, and coffee on hand, along with bookish prizes and a chance to swap reviews with new friends when you're ready to look up from the page.
The library itself is part of the African American Cultural Center (AACC) at NC State, a student success unit under the Division of Academic and Student Affairs. It's open to all identities and dedicated to promoting awareness and appreciation of African American and other African descent experiences. The library is an affiliate of the NC State University Libraries and houses more than 6,000 books centering African American and Afro-diasporic experiences, culture, society, and history, and it embodies the principle of Sankofa.
Beyond the books, the library offers an interfaith prayer and meditation room, a children's Book Nook, a Reader's R&R Station, and a collection of technology you can check out. Its coordinator, Wynter Douglas, provides one-on-one research consultations. The Readers Lounge is one of the monthly programs that bring the space to life as a community hub rather than just a place to borrow books.
