A breathtaking candlelight concert with stunning performances from the acclaimed London Concertante, featuring Tchaikovsky and Johann Strauss II.
London Concertante are playing at Portsmouth Cathedral on Thursday 17 December, as part of their Viennese Christmas Spectacular by Candlelight. It's a candlelit classical concert that pairs a selection of well-loved orchestral works with the cathedral's acoustics, and it's one of several dates they're playing across the city between 14 November and 3 January.
The programme runs through some of the most recognisable pieces in the classical repertoire. It opens with Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, then moves into Brahms' Hungarian Dance No. 5, and on to Johann Strauss II's Trisch-Trasch Polka. From there, it's a waltz from Tchaikovsky's ballet Sleeping Beauty, before finishing with the Blue Danube Waltz — a piece the organisers describe as the coronation of Johann Strauss II as the master of the Viennese waltz.
